General description of the collection: The 44th Bomb Group Collection spans from 21 January 1938-25 March 2006, and undated with the bulk of the materials concentrated in the period between 1942 and 1945 relating to the operational history of the 44th Bomb Group during World War II. Also, included is material related to the 44th Bomb Group Veterans Association. The collection contains original and reproduced documents, photographs, news clippings, memoirs, correspondence and books collected by and donated to the 44th Bomb Group Veterans Association historian C. W. "Will" Lundy, a former ground crew chief.

General Leon William Johnson (13 September 1904 – 10 November 1997) was a United States Air Force general who was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading the attack on the Ploesti oil fields during World War II. Johnson was born in Columbia, Missouri. He received his commission in the infantry from West Point in 1926, then earned his wings and transferred to the Air Corp in 1930.
